Nestled within the stunning Washburn Valley – just to the west of Harrogate – the dazzling waters of Swinsty Reservoir remain a walking hotspot for locals and visitors alike.
Located on the southern side of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this 5-kilometre footpath around the Swinsty embankment is well-laid out and mostly flat throughout, making it a great day out for ramblers of all abilities.

Offering plenty of variety for outdoorsy types; there’s also the opportunity to divert off the main path and explore the surrounding fields and woodlands.
Fun fact – On the banks of the reservoir you can spot Swinsty Hall – the current home of England football manager Gareth Southgate and his family!

Neighbouring Swinsty Reservoir also lies Fewston Reservoir. Equally picturesque and slightly longer in length at 6.4-kilometre, many ramblers choose to incorporate both embankments into one combined route.

A gentle 6.6-mile loop, walking the trail around Swinsty and Fewston should take roughly 3 hours to complete.

Is Swinsty Reservoir still closed?
After months of safety works carried out by Yorkshire Water, the circular trail around Swinsty Reservoir finally reopened as of April 2022.
