Watkin Path Waterfall: Ultimate Guide (Snowdonia’s Best Wild Swimming Spot?)

Snowdonia never fails to surprise us. Each adventure here, we always stumble across something new.

Without fail, our best discovery in the National Park has to be the time we chanced upon the Watkin Path Waterfall during an early morning stomp up Snowdon.

A sequence of crystal-clear falls and gorges cascading down the mountainside, Watkin Path Waterfall is nestled in the shadow of the iconic Welsh peak and looks out towards picture-perfect vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Watkins Path Waterfall & Pool, Snowdon
A wild swimmer’s paradise

While not at all difficult to find, it’s honestly quite astonishing this wild swimming gem isn’t more popular than it is. Many of my rambling pals had no idea it even existed!

This seems largely due to the waterfalls being located along the Watkin Path; renowned as one of the toughest and lesser-trodden routes ascending Snowdon.

Luckily for those who don’t fancy a difficult trek however, these natural pools are actually found close to the bottom of Watkin Path before the trail begins ramping up in difficulty.

A gentle incline up to the waterfalls, hiking to the Watkin Pools is a piece of cake. No scrambling required!

Where is Watkin Path Waterfall?

Situated in Snowdonia National Park, the waterfall is only accessible on foot via the Watkin Path which snakes its way up Snowdon’s mountainside.

Also known as the ‘Watkins Pool’, the trail starts from the A498 road – just south-west of Llyn Gwynant – taking you through a small woodland before arriving at the falls.

Where to park

The best parking spot when hiking to the Watkin Path Waterfall & pools is the car park at Pont Bethania. The start of the trail is just on the opposite side of the road from here.

As of our last visit, the pay-and-display machine was still only payable by cash. So be sure to bring some brass with you!

Step-by-step walk guide

  1. From the car park, cross the road and briefly follow it southwards, taking the right turning just before Caffi Gwynant.
  2. Keep to the trail and head up the stone steps to the left of Hafod y Llan (the National Trust Farm & Campsite)
  3. Follow the signposts into the woods, passing through several gates along the way.
  4. The path will eventually lead you out of the woodland and onto open moorlands, where the trail bends to the left.
  5. Stick to the footpath and you’ll soon be treated to incredible views of the sparkling falls to your right.
  6. Head to the Watkins Pools & Waterfalls and enjoy!

How long does it take to walk?

While the Watkin Path is notorious for being a trying hike with some white-knuckle scrambling, the earlier part of the trail leading to the waterfalls is surprisingly easy.

The Watkin Path Waterfalls are situated roughly a quarter of the way along the Watkin Path

A gentle incline through the woodlands, this walk is suitable for most and shouldn’t take any longer than 45-minutes to reach the falls.

Can you swim in Watkin Path Waterfall?

Indeed, Watkin Path Waterfall is arguably the most beautiful wild swimming spot in the whole of Snowdonia.

The perfect spot to go for a paddle, one look at this natural wonder and you’ll quickly see what all the fuss is about!

Funnily enough, we first stumbled across this gem of a location by accident during an early morning hike up Snowdon. Tired and sweaty on the descent, we couldn’t wait to get back down for a revitalising dip.

Notice – Wild swimming is fun, but it needs to be enjoyed safely. For those unfamiliar with the activity, please take time to read through Countryfile’s essential beginner guide and adhere to all safety precautions during your outings.

Can you wild camp at Watkin Path Waterfall?

I can’t say I’ve ever wild camped in Snowdonia, so I’m not knowledgeable enough to advise when it comes to the situation with park rangers around here.

For those wanting a proper campsite, there is the nearby Hafod y Llan National Trust Farm which offers pitching spots. Located practically a stone’s throw away from the falls, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better spot than this.

Likewise, for those who don’t mind camping a little further afield, we couldn’t recommend the Camping in Llanberis campsite enough. Also situated near Llyn Padarn and the top secret Snowdon Infinity Pool; this spot is a haven for wild swimming fanatics!

Which is better for swimming? – Watkin Path Waterfall vs Snowdon Infinity Pool

In recent years, droves of tourists have started making the journey to Snowdonia in the hopes of tracking down the top-secret Snowdon Infinity Pool.

Snowdonia Secret Infinity Pool

I won’t lie, it is undeniably a beautiful location and well worth a visit. However, for those after a proper swim in nature, the infinity pool simply doesn’t compare to the Watkin Path Waterfall.

While the shallow Infinity Pool is good for a few pictures and a picnic (when its not too busy), the falls found on the Watkin Path provide much better open water swimming and arguably even nicer panoramas of the National Park.

Top tips when visiting

Get here early

The car park is tiny and the waterfall gets rather busy from midday onwards in the summer months. Waking up bright and early will ensure you get to park up and enjoy the serene pools in all their glory before the crowds arrive.

Bring a picnic

We’d recommend packing some grub along with a beach towel to really make the most of your outing.

Climb the Watkin Path

For more daring types, why not make a full day of your visit and conquer Snowdon via the infamous Watkin Path? Challenging yet extremely rewarding, there’s no better way to finish your climb than with a frolic in the waterfall’s ice-cold waters afterwards.
